Lucky 7’s Beach Party weekend kicks off Friday with two tons of sand ready to fill every nook and cranny of the bar floor. This annual rite of spring lets you get a good taste of summer days and nights to come, and with a taste of warmer weather lined up, grab your board and put on you shorts and mandals or flip-flops as the waves roll into downtown. Unlike the Panama City Council which banned alcohol on beaches during Spring Break, Lucky 7’s will have a Brooklyn Brewery Tap Takeover on Friday Night with all 12 taps sudzzing and serving up refreshing brews. The Brewery crew will also have plenty of beach toys for you. High Tide is set for Saturday Night with Reggae bands Dub Cap and Universal Rebel providing Caribbean Kings and Queens with some Jamaican Jamming. After the bands DJ’s Jammin Tony and the Rasta Blasta Dave keep the reggae ton of fun going. On Sunday, it’s a Surf’s Up Industry night with WFMU DJ Pat Byrne, who hosts Prove it all Night at Monty Hall. Come in and take your shoes off – sands feel better between your toes than in your shorts.
With DJ options expanding downtown, as new places like Talde and Porta [don’t forget about next weeks 04/25 Last Saturday Night dance Party] sounding off. Early pioneers of Newark Ave’s restaurant Row, LITM reopens tonight with a retooled sound system and a new DJ booth, among other things. This pioneer [who is celebrating his 20th year in downtown this October] will be manning the controls for a Friday Night of Supercuts. I may not have a cosmetology certificate, but I’ve been running fun long enough to make a good time, come on down, walk ins are welcome. Making a move to downtown, Play Musician which host a Friday bi monthly event in Newport, will be hosting this Friday Night’s event at JCTC’s Merseles Gallery. Downstairs from my apartment Ted Chubb and his Jazzmen play Sushi Tango on Friday Night.
Besides a good dose of Reggae on Sunny Saturday [it’s also record store day!], This year’s 25th annual Cathedral Arts Festival at Grace Church showcases a full church van of great local artists. The Champagne Gala will also feature music, food, drinks, dancing, a silent auction and a performance from Jersey City’s premier dance troupe, Nimbus Dance Works. All artwork is for sale with a percentage of each sale going to Grace Church Van Vorst. Proceeds from the sale support the operational and outreach activities of Grace Church Van Vorst. click here for tickets. Also on Saturday Night, The Laugh Tour slips on banana’s at Art House Productions, and The One and Nines plays the Lincoln Inn, and Jaguar Shark and Lifeeaters play at the Dopeness.
Sunday is shaping up also to be a beautiful day, if you need some shaping up yourself, make your way to the end of Washington Street and to Peninsula Park, also know as the Jetty for some pick-up volleyball. The JC Waterfront Volleyball crew sets up at 1:30 pm, skills vary, but usually fun is had by all.
Also if you haven’t come out on Wednesday’s yet to the Union Republic of Bluegrass, make yourself a note for this and every Wednesday.
Next Sunday, we will be Welcoming the Goats and Celebrate Mother Earth at the Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery. There will be Tours, Live Goats, Live Chickens and Live Music by Bitterheart, NIPSEY, The Sensational Country Blue Wonders, Fiscal Cliff, The McNair HS Band, a performance by Shua Group, and much more. If you can make the event you can always donate at www.jerseycitycemetery.org / or if you would like to help volunteer come by this Saturady morning at 9 am and work with Jersey Cares at Veteran’s Cemetery Community Service 9am
